European Eagle Owls and Flourspar

European Eagle Owls and Flourspar

A rare late summer visit to one of our old haunts. The Peak District has been a key part of our enjoyment of the great outdoors since the early 1980’s.

There are always surprises just around the corner, but to encounter a pair of European Eagle Owls sat outside a pub in Hartington was a bit special. Their handlers were quite happy for everyone to take a snapshot of them, as long as we didn’t crowd in too close.

Elsewhere, I was delighted to see that the Long Rake Spar Co Ltd, near Youlgreave, was enjoying a renaissance after some recent reinvestment. Extraction of Flourspar has been going on and off for around 150 years in Derbyshire. Long may it continue!
