Portland Stone and Carline Thistle

Portland Stone and Carline Thistle

Today we walked around the Isle of Portland for the first time and I got the chance to see the quarries where the famous Portland Stone is extracted. This Jurassic limestone has been used as a building stone in many iconic public buildings such as Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

This photo shows a Carline Thistle, which is a member of the Daisy family. It grows up to a foot tall in grass, mostly on chalk or limestone. But I didn’t spot any today! The one shown was snapped at Newborough Warren on Anglesey last month.
